Virat Kohli does not take a day off, especially when it comes to preparing for a major competition like the World Cup. Kohli had recently returned to the Indian team after a lengthy sabbatical from international cricket. He acknowledged that during that time he had not picked up his bat. And the former India skipper made a triumphant comeback, scoring an astonishing 122* against Afghanistan at the Asia Cup to break a near three-year-long century drought.
Since that day, Kohli has been in good touch with the bat and appears to have flawlessly shaped himself into India's new batting model for T20 international cricket. His achievements in the white-ball format have been phenomenal, and he continues to impress everyone with his skills and techniques.
Cricketers and pundits laud him for his game, and former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting joined the bandwagon to praise the stalwart. His comments came while commentating during the T20 World Cup warm-up game between India and Australia, which took place at The Gabba on October 17, Monday.
Kohli's records are amazing: Ponting
“He has led his team really well. The win in Australia in the Test series in Australia is amazing. Not sure I've seen a better white-ball cricketer ever. What he does in One-Day International cricket is unbelievable. His records are amazing,” said Ponting from the commentary box.
After arriving in Australia, Kohli was rested for the first two exhibition games against Western Australia. Nevertheless, he was reinserted into the starting lineup for the official warm-up match against the hosts and reigning T20 world champions, Australia where he scored a 13-ball 19 before walking off.
India will next face New Zealand in their second warm-up fixture, which will also be their last one before the campaign opener against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday, October 23. The two teams locked horns twice during the Asia Cup 2022 which was held in the UAE. While India won the first game of the group stage, Pakistan emerged victorious in the Super Four fixture.
