India registered a convincing 65-run victory over New Zealand in the second T20I at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui to go 1-0 up in the three-match series. Nothing went right for the hosts in their first innings except for veteran pacer Tim Southee's hat-trick that prevented the opposition from posting a total in excess of 200 runs.
In the second innings, the Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson try his level best to make a contest out of this even though the asking rate had already skyrocketed by the time he accelerated. Williamson did manage to score some precious runs at the death, but they were only enough to reduced the margin of defeat.
Suryakumar Yadav turns out to be the difference maker of the match
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Ishan Kishan did the bulk of scoring for India while Rishabh Pant struggled in the middle before being dismissed just before the end of Powerplay. He scored a painstaking six runs from 13 deliveries.
Following the dismissals of Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, in-form Suryakumar Yadav unleashed his power-hitting abilities in the middle overs and single-handedly kept the scoreboard ticking for India and at one point in time, it appeared as if the visitors would end up posting a mammoth total on the board.
Nonetheless, Southee bowled a tight final over by accounting for the likes of Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda and Washington Sundar off successive deliveries and only conceded five runs to finish with figures of 3/34 from his four overs at an economy of 8.5 as India were restricted to 191/6. Yadav remained unbeaten on 111 runs off 51 deliveries at an outstanding strike rate of 217.6.
In reply, New Zealand kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but captain Kane Williamson soldiered on for the hosts and kept them in the hunt with a 48-ball half-century. But, once he was bowled by Mohammed Siraj in the 18th over for a well-made 52-ball 61, it all fell apart for the Blackcaps and they were bundled out in the penultimate over for just 126 runs.
For India, Deepak Hooda was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/10 from his 2.5 overs at an economy of 3.5. He was ably supported by Mohammed Siraj (2/24), Yuzvendra Chahal (2/26), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/12), and, Washington Sundar (1/24).
