BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on Wednesday, February 14 confirmed that Rohit Sharma will don the captain’s hat for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is slated to begin on June 1 and will be played in West Indies and the USA.

After a disappointing defeat at the hands of Australia in the ODI World Cup final in 2023, there were a lot of doubts, with many reports claiming that Hardik Pandya would captain India in the shortest format. Shah, however, has shown his confidence in Rohit, who has played a key role in helping Mumbai Indians win five IPL trophies in the past. Looking at his track record, the management backed him. Shah also stated confidently that India will win the upcoming T20 World Cup under the leadership of Rohit.

“I want to promise you that we’ll lift the trophy in Barbados in the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy,” Shah said at an event in Rajkot.

Rohit, who was in attendance, couldn’t stop the smile as the players around him started clapping and cheering for him after Shah's announcement. He too responded with applause and a wide smile as the video of the same has gone viral on social media.

'We will talk about it soon' - Jay Shah on Virat Kohli's T20I future

After Rohit’s announcement was confirmed, Shah was asked about Virat Kohli’s future in T20I cricket. However, the BCCI secretary kept the cards close to his chest. “We will talk about it soon,” said Shah.

The star batter opted out of the ongoing England series citing personal reasons. His return is currently a matter of speculation and in case the 35-year-old fails to deliver in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League, Kohli might get dropped from the T20I set up.

IPL is likely to give a lot of answers as the form of some of the key players in the first half of the tournament is likely to determine India’s squad for the world tournament.
