India’s captain Rohit Sharma almost pulled off a sensational victory from nowhere in the second ODI against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka. The 35-year-old suffered a blow to his thumb while fielding in the first innings and did not take the field after that and did not even come out to open the innings for India in the chase.

India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and the equation got tougher with the set batter Shreyas Iyer (82) and Axar Patel (56) both dismissed towards the final stages. While many expected Rohit to not take a risk, the skipper showed immense courage to come out with a bruised thumb and bat at number nine to save the game for his team.

India had a stiff task at hand when Rohit arrived at the crease, however, the right-hander brought the equation down to 20 required off the last over. He hit two fours and a big six in the final over against Mustafizur and needed to clear the rope on the last delivery with India needing six runs. However, Mustafizur held his nerve and bowled it in the block hole and managed to restrict Rohit.

Addressing Rohit’s brilliant innings, his better half Ritika Sajdeh posted an Instagram story acknowledging his effort on the field. “I love you and I’m so proud of the man you are. To go out like that and do that,” Sajdeh wrote in her story.

The valiant effort went in vain as India lost the second ODI to Bangladesh by just five runs. However, Rohit’s willingness to step up for the country was appreciated on social media throughout his knock of unbeaten 51 off 28 deliveries which comprised three fours and five sixes.

The two teams will now meet in the third and final ODI of the series in Chattogram on December 10.
