It had to be Virat Kohli, the man who has done it for India on umpteen occasions, rose to the occasion once again in a clash against Pakistan that went down to the wire. India got over the line on the very final delivery as a full-house MCG witnessed one of the all-time classics between the two fierce rivals.
The Men in Blue, led by Rohit Sharma, opted to bowl first after the skipper won the toss in the high-octane clash. The Indians delivered the first blow in the match after Arshdeep Singh sent back the Pakistani skipper Babar Azam for a golden duck on the very first delivery of his T20 World Cup debut.
He then struck another crucial blow after dismissing the no.1 T20 batter in the world Mohammad Rizwan with a sharp bouncer in his next over. Pakistan were in trouble, and that is when Iftikhar Ahmed and Shan Masood stitched a crucial 76-run stand to take on the Indian bowling attack.
Pakistan were in ascendency thanks to Iftikhar's brisk half-century. Shadab Khan and Haider Ali were dismissed in quick succession as the red mist descended on the Pakistani batters. But Masood's defiant half-century coupled with crucial cameos from Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf took the Men in Green to a stiff total of 159 runs in their 20 overs.
Virat Kohli compiled one of the best T20I innings to take India over the line in a tense finale
India's chase was off to an abysmal start as the Pakistani bowlers blew away the batters on a bouncy track at the MCG. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma were dismissed for single-digit scores before Haris Rauf struck the telling blow, dismissing the in-form Suryakumar Yadav.
India's misery was compounded after the experiment of sending Axar Patel up the order backfired for Rohit. It looked like a lost cause, but Virat Kohli had other ideas. The chase master as he is often called, put on a display only he could. His partnership with Hardik Pandya got India right back into the game.
With India needing 16 off the final over, Pakistan hit back by getting rid of the dangerous Pandya on the very first delivery. But the match took another turn when Kohli dispatched a maximum off a no-ball. India were on the brink before Pakistan struck back with Karthik's wicket. But Ravichandran Ashwin kept his cool to hand India the victory from a near impossible scenario.
The netizens were in disbelief witnessing one of the great World Cup games and came up with some hilarious memes:
