England locked horns against New Zealand in match 33 of the Super 12 stage in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the Gabba. The Englishmen came into this match with one goal in mind, that was to make their case stronger for the semi-finals of the marquee tournament. On the other hand, New Zealand were placed well in the match after massive wins against Australia and Sri Lanka that handed an uptick in terms of the net run rate.

However, England got the better out of the Kiwis as they won by 20 runs in the much-anticipated fixture and are now inching closer towards the last four of the event. Jos Buttler’s side won the toss and decided to bat first, and the skipper was in no mood to take things complacently. Buttler got going as he smashed a 47-ball 73 at a strike rate of 155.32 that included as many as seven fours and two maximums. His partner at the other end, Alex Hales too put up a show scoring 52 off 40 balls that helped the side attain a grand total of 179 in their 20 overs.

Tough luck for ‘unbeaten’ New Zealand

In response to the total, the Black Caps tried to match up to the level set by the English side, however the former had to eventually go down to Buttler’s side. Glenn Phillips nearly got the Kiwis to a winning case as the match almost came down to the wire when he got going. The explosive hitter smashed 62 runs off just 36 balls as he targeted Adil Rashid at one point. With no help coming from the other end, the pressure seemed to have mounted on Phillips only for him to get dismissed a few overs later by Sam Curran.

The race for the semi-finals is wide open as the forthcoming matches will set the tone of the showpiece event. England, Australia, and New Zealand are still the frontrunners for the two spots in Group 1 of the Super 12 stage.
