Afghanistan stunned the cricketing world as they defeated Australia by 21 runs. It was a huge setback to the Australian side in their hopes to make it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. The Aussies now have to win against India and make it to the final four as they enjoy a better net run-rate compared to Afghanistan. 

One of the earliest talking points from the game was the 118-run opening wicket stand between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. That partnership was broken when Marcus Stoinis dismissed the Afghan batter for 60.

While celebrating the wicket, Marcus Stoinis flapped both his arms as if to tell the batter to head back to the dugout and avoid the repercussions of being chastised over the same.

Naib destroys Australian batting lineup

Chasing 149 to win, the Australian side didn’t have any answer to the disciplined bowling by the Afghans. Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh to strike the two early blows.

From there, Glenn Maxwell tried his best as he waged a lone battle to keep his team in the hunt for a win. But Gulbadin Naib got the wicket of Maxwell caught by Noor Ahmad to more or less seal the deal for his side. The pacer turned the match in his team's favour as he picked 4/20 from his four overs. 

Afghanistan will next face Bangladesh on Tuesday morning while the Australians will take on India in the evening game (India time). Australia have to win and in case they lose, then Bangladesh must beat Afghanistan to do the 2021 T20 World Cup winners a huge favour. 

Speaking at the end of the game, Rashid Khan said, “Massive win for us as a team and as a nation. Great feeling. It's something we missed in last two years. Really happy with the win and super proud of the guys. Quite important for us that we went back with the same playing XI. We're reading the opposition bowling lineup and selecting XI accordingly. 140 was a good total on this wicket. We didn't finish as well as we should have."
