Former India cricketer Yusuf Pathan took oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha on Tuesday, June 25. The two-time world champion joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) earlier in the year and contested Lok Sabha elections from Berhampore in West Bengal.

Notably, he defeated veteran Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and BJP’s Nirmal Kumar Saha and emerged victorious by 85,022 votes. Pathan took oath in a navy blue bandhgala and shook hands with Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab after the completion.

“I, Pathan Yusuf Khan, having been elected a member of the House of People do swear in the name of God affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India and that I will faithfully discharge the duty upon which I am about to enter. Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, Jai Gujarat,” Pathan pledged.

After winning the elections, Pathan expressed his desire to build a sports complex in Baharampore. He also wanted to develop industries and work for the betterment of the people in the region.

“I will make a sports academy first so that they can make a career. I will also work for industries. I will be living here and working for the people. I will also be in Gujarat as my family is there. I have got a new family in Baharampur (Berhampore). I talked to Didi (Mamata Banerjee). They are happy,” Pathan said.
