Shubman Gill is considered by many as the next superstar of Indian batting and a worthy successor of the legendary Virat Kohli. Both of them share a stunning similarity. Kohli was a giant in ODI cricket but took a bit of time to hit his straps in the other formats. The same can be said about Shubman, who is an epitome of consistency in ODIs but hasn't been as successful in Tests and T20Is.
Shubman entered the Indian team in 2019, when Kohli was the captain. The two stylish players from the northern part of India developed great camaraderie, proving once again that age difference is no barrier to friendship.
On Monday, May 12, Kohli shocked the cricket world by announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game. An emotional Shubman took to his official 'X' handle and spoke about Kohli's infectious energy on the field. The 25-year-old thanked the senior statesman for the influence he had had on him and hoped that the next generation would be able to play the game with the same fire and commitment as the former India skipper.

"Anything I write for you, paji, will never truly capture what I feel or the impact you’ve had on me. From watching you bat when I was 13 and wondering how someone could bring that kind of energy to the field - to sharing the field with you and realizing no one else possibly can - you’ve not just inspired a generation, you’ve reshaped the mindset of millions," Shubman wrote.
"I know how much Test cricket meant to you, and I hope our generation can carry forward that same fire and commitment. Thank you for everything. Happy retirement, @imVkohli paji," he added.
