The Virat Kohli era, both as a batsman and a captain, is being compared to the previous generations. As a batsman, he is constantly compared to Sachin Tendulkar. As a captain, he is compared with MS Dhoni, especially after leading India to their first ever bilateral series win in South Africa last month.

However, former India captain and one of the finest batsmen, Sourav Ganguly feels it is too early to judge the present team and its future and they should not be compared to the other national teams.

Too soon to judge the current team?

Ganguly, who is now a commentator and also the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) told CNN-News18 that every generation in Indian cricket has witnessed a legendary player, which is why it is difficult to compare one with another. He also said that the present generation of Indian cricketers should be compared only after they have played at least a decade of cricket. While spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are winning matches for India, it needs to be kept in mind that the two have two years and one year of international experience respectively.

“It is very difficult to compare generations. But every generation in Indian cricket has produced a champion, Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar and I think Kohli is the one in this generation. This generation should be compared seven to eight years down the line because we became a Ganguly or Dravid or Tendulkar after playing for 15 years,” CNN-News18 quoted Ganguly as saying on Saturday.

The former captain further elaborated on his statement and explained the time for which some of the current Indian players have played international cricket, and said that they need to be given more time before being hailed as the best.

“Virat Kohli being the senior most with Dhoni with 10 years or 11 years but the other boys whether its Rahane or Rohit or Murali Vijay have four or five seasons. I would give a little more time and see where they finish and then compare the generation,” said Sourav Ganguly.
