Sourav Ganguly praises Ravi Ashwin on being the highest wicket-taker of the decade

Ravi Ashwin, the Indian off-break bowler, has been a massive asset to the national team. The Madras-born made his debut for Team India back in June 5 in an ODI versus Zimbabwe in the Harare Sports Club. In the very next year, he went on to don the national jersey in the 2011 World Cup in India that the hosts won by defeating Sri Lanka in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In the very year, Ashwin made his Test debut versus the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Ever since, he hasn’t looked back and has kept garnering numerous laurels across all the formats. Currently, Ashwin is a Test specialist for Team India after the likes of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal impressed. The tweaker last took part in ODIs and T20Is back in June-July 2017.

Ashwin has also played quite a significant amount of county cricket and that has helped him understand his game with more depth. His is only 33 years old and being a spinner, still has a few years ahead of him where he can create more records at various levels. He has also played a number of seasons in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) where he shone with both bat and ball.

Ashwin has played 70 Tests, 111 ODIs and 46 T20Is in which he has racked up 362, 150 and 52 wickers respectively. He has as many as 27 five-wicket hauls and 20 four-wicket hauls while wearing the Indian colours. All in all, Ashwin has 564 wickets thus far for India. The numbers are the highest by any bowler in this decade. Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly had words of praises for Ashwin.

Ganguly, who’s the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), lauded Ashwin for his stupendous efforts. He also feels that the tweaker is a tad under-rated and his achievements don’t often hog the headlines.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Most international wickets for Ashwin this decade. what an effort .. just get a Feeling it goes unnoticed at times .. super stuff ..”
