Virat Kohli took over the Test captaincy from MS Dhoni after the wicketkeeper-batsman decided to step down from the longest format back in 2014. Earlier in 2017, Kohli also took over the reins from Dhoni in the ODI and T20I format. While Dhoni has been seen providing tips to Kohli during play, the Delhi-born cricketer hasn’t disappointed as the new captain.
Meanwhile, Dhoni’s place in the team was also questioned and he was greeted with brickbats owing to his style of play. He is 37 years old and is at the twilight of his illustrious career. However, his hunger to play the sport hasn’t died down by any means. Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian batsman, reckoned that Virat has helped Dhoni in expressing himself without any inhibitions.
“He is a legend”- Ganguly on Dhoni
“Virat Kohli is a brilliant captain. He always wants his team to win. Virat has handled MS Dhoni well. We haven’t seen this happen in the past. Normally, former captains fade away with time. But Virat has given confidence to Dhoni that he is still an important player for the team in ODIs and T20Is,” Ganguly was quoted as saying in India TV’s show Cricket Ki Baat.
Dhoni is one of the greatest cricketers India have ever produced and he is also one of the country’s most successful captains along with the likes of Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, and others. Ganguly also believes that the Jharkhand-born cricketer is an essential part of the team with the World Cup to take place in a year’s time.
“Dhoni is a great player. He has played in so many matches, he has captained India in so many matches. He is a legend. The next World Cup is just a year away and it will be played in England. Till then, I feel Dhoni will have an important role to play in the team,” the retired cricketer added.
