Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly who redefined the cricket landscape in the country celebrates his birthday today. As he turned 46 on July 8, cricketers all over the world paid tribute to the warrior as Ganguly’s Twitter account got flooded with wishes. Popularly known as Dada or the prince of Kolkata, Sourav is one of the most successful Indian captains, who led the nation to several victories at home and overseas.
Sourav Ganguly enjoyed an illustrious career and is the 3rd batsman in International cricket history to score more than 10,000 runs after Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam Ul Haq. Despite retiring from international cricket a decade earlier in 2008, the batting dynamo still remains in the top 10 list of all time run-getters. Currently, he is the 8th highest run scorer with 11, 363 runs in 311 matches.
One of the highlights of his tenure as a captain was when he led an Indian side filled with youngsters all the way to the ICC World Cup final in 2003. Ganguly will always be known for his incredible ability to unearth talents and the faith he showed in them. During his stint at the helm, Dada had brought forth players like Harbhajan Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh and helped them flourish at the world stage.
Sourav Ganguly: The Batting dynamo
For his amazing control and stroke play square of the wicket, Sourav Ganguly earned a nickname as God of Off Side and Master of Covers. Justifying the nickname, Ganguly’s successor, Rahul Dravid had once said, “On the offside, first there is God, then Sourav Ganguly!”
Ganguly’s captaincy may have overshadowed his credentials as a batsman, but he was really a magician with the bat. Whether he was cutting pacers through the off-side or dancing down the track to leg-spinners, Ganguly was a treat to watch.
Today, on Ganguly’s birthday the Tweeple showered him with praises. Let’s take a look at some of them.
