South Africa race towards clinching the series with the Australians reduced to 110/6 by the end of the 2nd day in response to the Saffers’ total of 488. Temba Bavuma’s unbeaten 95 helped the home team to add 169 runs on the 2nd day for their last four wickets. Keshav Maharaj scored a quick-fire 45 before Pat Cummins bagged a 5-wicket haul to deny Bavuma’s 2nd Test hundred. The Aussies conceded six wickets in the final session to some poor strokes and tight bowling by the hosts.

2 – Pat Cummins took the 2nd 5-wicket haul in his 14-match Test career spread across six and half years. His first 5-wicket haul came during his debut Test in 2011 which was also against South Africa and also in Johannesburg.


2 – Morne Morkel became only the 2nd South Africa player since their readmission to bag golden duck in their career’s final Test match. John Commins bagged a golden duck in his last Test match played against Pakistan in the 1995 Johannesburg Test.


6 – Number of fifty-plus partnerships in South Africa’s first innings. This is the first instance for South Africa where they had six 50+ partnerships in a Test inning.


7 – Runs Joe Burns scored in the last five innings in Test cricket. His last five scores in Test cricket read 0, 1, 2, 0 and 4 (Today).


26 – Number of overs Josh Hazlewood bowled in South Africa’s first innings without a wicket. These are the most overs bowled by an Australian opening bowler without success in the first innings of a Test match since 2009. Stuart Clark went wicketless after bowling 33 overs in the 2008 Delhi Test against India.


182 – Nathan Lyon conceded 182 runs in the 40 overs he bowled in South Africa’s first innings. These are the 2nd most runs conceded by any bowler in a Test innings in South Africa. Saqlain Mushtaq conceded 237 runs for his three wickets in 50 overs in the opening innings of the 2003 Cape Town Test.


488 – South Africa’s total of 488 is their 2nd highest Test total in which the highest partnership is 105 and lower. They posted 501 against Sri Lanka in the 2001 Cape Town Test where 101 was the highest stand. Their total of 488 is overall the 10th highest where the highest partnership is 105 and lower.
