The seventh One-Day International between India and South Africa turned out to be a low-scoring thriller. Manoj Prabhakar trapped Andrew Hudson cheaply to start the game. Peter Kirsten and Kepler Wessels brought South Africa back into the game with a 65-runs stand.

However, a triple-strike from left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju pushed the Proteas back. It eventually required a quick-fire half-century from Hansie Cronje to take the Proteas over the 200-runs mark. Chasing a modest 204 runs, India stuttered in the first 25 overs.

Mohammed Azharuddin’s men were reduced to 80/4 after 25 overs. At the end of the 37th over, India were reeling on 130/5 and required 74 runs in 77 balls. However, Pravin Amre’s gutsy 84 runs and Vijay Yadav’s swashbuckling 34 runs guided India past the finishing line with 16 balls to spare.
