India ended the series with another empathic win over the home team driven by their captain Virat Kohli’s 3rd century of the series. The Indian bowlers restricted South Africa to just 204 after electing to bowl first. After the opener departed for low scores, Kohli stepped up with an attacking display scoring fifty off only 36 balls and reaching hundred in 83 balls. The Indian skipper remained unbeaten on 129 to take his team home by 33rd over with eight wickets in hand.

All the stats and numbers that recorded during India’s dominant win in the final ODI:

1 – Virat Kohli became the first player in ODI history to score 500 runs in a bilateral series. Rohit Sharma’s 491 runs in the 2013 ODI series against Australia were the previous most runs for any player in a bilateral ODI series.


3 – Number of centuries for Virat Kohli in this series. He became the first Indian player to score three centuries in a bilateral ODI series. Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman scored three tons in the 2003 CWC and 2004 VB series respectively.


4 – Number of times India bowled out South Africa in this series. They are the first team to bowl out South Africa four times in an ODI series/tournament.


5 – The five losses for South Africa in this series are the joint most for them in an ODI series. They lost five games in the 7-match ODI series in 2002 against the Aussies.


13 – Number of centuries for Virat Kohli as a captain in ODI format. These are the joint 2nd most for any player while leading the team. AB de Villiers also scored 13 ODI tons as a captain while Ricky Ponting scored 22 ODI hundreds while leading his team.


17 – Kuldeep Yadav’s 17 wickets are the joint most by any player in a bilateral ODI series in South Africa. He equalled Craig Matthews’ 17 wickets in the 1994 ODI series against Australia. Yuzvendra Chahal’s 16 are behind the two in this list.


28 – Number of man of the match awards for Virat Kohli in ODI format. Among Indians, only Sachin Tendulkar (62) and Sourav Ganguly (31) received more man of the match awards in this format than Kohli.


100 – Kohli took 100 catches in the 208 ODI matches. He is the 5th Indian player to take 100 catches as a fielder in the ODI format.


363 – Innings Virat Kohli needed for completing 17000 runs in International cricket; the quickest to the milestone. Hashim Amla was the previous fastest to 17000 International runs taking 381 innings.


558 – Kohli’s 558 runs in this series are the 2nd most by an Indian in an ODI series/tournament. Sachin Tendulkar aggregated 673 runs in 11 games at the 2003 CWC.


600MS Dhoni became the first Indian and the 3rd player to take 600 catches as a wicket-keeper in International cricket. Dhoni completed 400 ODI dismissals and 500 List A dismissals as a keeper earlier in this series.
