An injury to South African speedster Dale Steyn opened the gates for other pacers in the squad. Lungi Ngidi, Duanne Olivier and Chris Morris were up to grab the spot of the fourth seamer. Morris was considered to be the first choice given his prowess with the bat but the Proteas thought otherwise. Ngidi was picked ahead of the other two pacers at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

South Africa managed to add 269 runs on the first day of the Test. Ngidi hasn’t had his opportunity to contribute in the game yet, he is likely to serve his first with a bat in hand as the Proteas resume their day on Sunday. The selection was met with excitement as South African cricket unearthed another fast bowling talent with a bright future.

X-Factor Ngidi

Ngidi burst onto the international stage at the start of 2017 when he played a vital role in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, picking up six wickets. The 21-year-old is a naturally aggressive bowler who has plenty of pace. Following his debut success, the Durban star went on to suffer an injury which ended his year in an unsatisfactory manner.

After battling with injury, Ngidi eventually made his comeback in October. He has his pace back and looks physically stronger than he did before a side strain and then a problematic back ruled him out for most of last year.

“He is a guy who really does wear his heart on his sleeve and I’ve got no doubt he’s going to be fired up tomorrow when he does get his chance. He’s worked hard and it’s good to see good people getting rewarded. He’s got much stronger and fitter. He’s put in a lot of hard work in the gym, not just on the field.” Aiden Markram said.

In July 2016, Cricket South Africa named Ngidi as the T20 cup player of the year and he has never looked back since.

South Africa were cruising on the first day before Hardik Pandya‘s athleticism and a few late wickets brought the visitors back into the game. They will look to consolidate as they resume on 269 for 6.
