Pakistan stayed alive in the 5-match ODI series against South Africa with a huge 8-wicket victory at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Thus, the visiting side has brought an end to Proteas’ 6-match winning streak in the Pink ODIs. The hosts were bowled out for 164 despite the fifties from Hashim Amla (59) and Faf du Plessis (57) as Usman Khan Shinwari claimed four wickets in the space of six balls. Imam-ul-Haq (71), Fakhar Zaman (44) and Babar Azam (41*) ensured Pakistan chased down the total with 111 balls to spare.

South Africa’s worst at the Johannesburg:
1 – This was Pakistan’s first victory in International cricket over South Africa in Johannesburg. They played ten Internationals before this game against the hosts at this venue losing in nine of them. Pakistan lost four ODIs, three Tests and two T20Is against the Saffers in Johannesburg while another game ended in a draw.
7 – South Africa was on a 7-match winning streak in the ODI format before this match in Johannesburg. Their last ODI defeat at this venue came in 2012 against Sri Lanka while defending 312.
164 – South Africa’s total of 164 is their 2nd lowest total in ODI cricket at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. They were bowled out for 149 by England during the 2000 ODI which was a 45-over game. However, they bounced back by winning the game by a 38-run margin.
Usman runs through Saffers:
6 – Usman Khan Shinwari claimed four wickets in the space of six balls. Only two bowlers in ODI history have taken four wickets in the space of fewer deliveries.
Lasith Malinga picked four in four during the CWC 2007 match against South Africa while Saqlain Mushtaq took four wickets in five deliveries including a hat-trick against Zimbabwe in the 1996 Peshawar ODI.
8 – Runs South Africa aggregated for their last five wickets. This is only the 3rd time where South Africa aggregated less than ten runs for their last five wickets in an ODI. Other two instances were also against Pakistan as they lost their last five wickets for seven during the 1993 East London ODI and also in the 2000 Singapore ODI.
Malik leads after a long gap:
69 – Sarfraz Ahmed led Pakistan in 69 consecutive International matches since the start of April 2017; the longest streak for any captain for Pakistan. Sarfraz went past Waqar Younis’ 61-match streak during the Test series against New Zealand. His 34-match streak as Pakistan captain in ODIs also came to an end during this match; the 3rd highest for a Pakistan captain.
2009 – Shoaib Malik led Pakistan in an ODI game for the first time in the ODI format. The last time Malik led Pakistan in this format was in January 2009 in the home ODI series against Sri Lanka. After this, Malik led Pakistan in three T20Is in February 2010 which was his last appearance as the skipper in International cricket.
A big stand in a low total:
164 – South Africa’s total of 164 is the joint 2nd lowest completed ODI innings to include a century partnership. Pakistan was bowled out for 161 against Sri Lanka during the 2009 Karachi ODI despite a 108-run 4th wicket stand. India was also bundled out for 164 during the 2005 Bulawayo ODI against New Zealand despite a 118-run stand for the 9th wicket.
End of a wait:
27.1 – Usman Khan Shinwari failed to pick up a wicket in each of his previous three ODI matches. He failed to pick a wicket in 27.1 overs before bagged four wickets in the space of six deliveries.
3 – The player of the match award in this game was the 3rd for Usman Khan in the ODI format; the joint most for any player since his ODI debut. Trent Boult and Mujeeb ur Rahman also have three such awards in this span but have played 22 and 23 ODIs respectively. Usman featured in only 11 ODI matches thus far.
45.5 – Number of overs Mohammad Amir has bowled between his 58th and 59th wicket in the ODI format. Amir failed to pick a wicket in each of his last six ODI games.
