Led by Chris Gayle, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots edged past Jamaica Tallawahs by 37 runs to clinch a place in the playoffs of the CPL for the first time in their three-year history. Tallawahs gave a hearty effort early in the chase but never seriously challenged the Patriots’ total. However, a cameo from Auckland’s Glenn Phillips revived hopes for the Jamaica-based franchise for a brief period. Phillips made 31 from 27 balls at the top-of-the-order for Jamaica as part of an opening partnership of 64 runs with Trevon Griffith, who top scored with 42 from 32.

Chris Gayle guides his team to the playoffs

The match saw skipper Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis combine at their destructive best to guide St Kitts into the playoffs stage with a comprehensive victory over the Tallawahs. Marking the 50th CPL match for the Universe Boss, the left-hander slammed his 63rd T20 fifty to guide his side through.

The swashbuckling batsman looked in sublime form as he scored 71* off 55 balls to help the Patriots post a massive total of 208 for 3 on the scoreboard, the highest total of the CPL this season. They didn’t face much trouble either in restricting the Tallawahs to 171 for 7. The bowling department also put up a commendable performance with left-arm wrist-spinner Shamsi, picking up 3 for 35 in four overs.

The Tallawahs lost wickets at regular intervals as they tried to raise their run rate and finished on 171 for seven as Shamsi picked up three wickets for 35 from his four overs. The Patriots cemented the second spot on the table with the victory.
