Gone were the days when a Sri Lankan team used to be a threat to the opposition team. Gone are the days when players like  Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara, and Lasith Malinga used to create fear among the minds of the rival team. Those players left a legacy, but the new players have failed to even come close to giving a fight to the top teams. This time the Asian team suffered a series whitewash against England and were hammered round and square in the three-match T20I series.

This loss is their fifth consecutive series loss in the shortest format sinking the team to a new low. There was no doubt about the result as they were expected to be beaten by even a second-string England team at home, but what angered the experts and fans on how they were beaten without even putting up a fight. In the last T20I they shot for 91 and that was the last nail in the coffin for the fans.

Few unhappy fans have now launched a campaign on the team and the hashtag #unfollowcricketers was trending on the Facebook pages. The fans have also boycotted vice-captain Kusal Mendis and batter Dhanushka Gunathilaka for their dismal performances with the bat during the course of the series.

“The aim of the campaign is to unfollow failed Sri Lankan cricketers from their verified profiles on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter,” as reported by NewsCenter.IK website said.

Fans unhappy by Sri Lanka’s yet another abject failure

What made fans even angrier was these cricketers getting undue attention from the social media without putting performance of note in recent times. “Unfollow all these failed cricketers,” said Ahmed Inaamulhaq on Twitter. “Don’t let them have the social media attention if they can’t perform for the national team. They do not deserve massive fan bases.”

The fans feel this is one of the worst performances by the team and they lost without even putting a strong fight.” I have been watching cricket matches since 1993 but I have never seen such a weak Sri Lankan cricket team,” sports reporter Manjula Basnayake said on Twitter.
