It took India just about 4 sessions to wrap up both the innings of Sri Lanka in the 3rd and final Test at Pallekele and complete the whitewash. Sri Lanka resumed the day 3 at 19/1 and got bowled out for just 181 by Tea and conceded huge innings and 171-run win for India. The both sides will now be facing each other in the limited-overs leg starting next week.
Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.
1 – This is the first time India whitewashed a team in a 3 or more match series away from home. Overall, this is the 5th time India have affected whitewash in a 3 or more match Test series.
2 – This is the 2nd time a team has whitewashed Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka in Test cricket. Australia defeated Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka by 3-0 in 2004.
3 – Only the 3rd time in Sri Lanka failed to record an individual fifty in a home Test after batting in both the innings of a Test. The other two instances were vs Pakistan at Kandy in 1986 and against South Africa at Colombo (SSC) in 1993.
3.5 – Virat Kohli’s win-loss ratio of 3.5 in Test cricket outside the home is the 3rd best for any captain. Only Douglas Jardine (6.0) and Don Bradman (5.0) have a better win/loss ratio as captain outside the home.
5 – India now has won their 5th consecutive Test against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka; the most consecutive wins vs SL in SL for any team. They broke the record streak of Australia, who won 4 in a row against Sri Lanka in SL between 2004 and 2011.
7 – Number of wins in Test cricket outside the home for Virat Kohli; the 2nd most for an Indian captain. He is now only behind Sourav Ganguly, who won 11 Tests outside India.
9 – This is only the 9th series of 3 or more games in which a team affected whitewash outside the home. India are the first Asian side to whitewash a team outside the home.
9 – Number of wins in Test cricket for India in Sri Lanka; the most number of wins for any visiting side. They went past Pakistan who have 8 wins on their name.
171 – India’s innings and 171-run win in this game is their 4th biggest innings win in Test cricket and the 2nd biggest outside home. The highest is by innings and 239 runs against Bangladesh in 2007 at Dhaka.
251 – Wickets Ravichandran Ashwin has taken in Asia in Test cricket; he is the 6th player to take 250+ wickets in Asia and the 12th player with 250+ wickets in a continent. He is the fastest to reach the milestone among the 12 players by taking only 39 Tests.
316 – Sri Lanka’s match aggregate of 316 is their 2nd lowest in a Test match against India. They scored a total of 280 runs in a Test match at Chandigarh in 1994.
