Stats: Australia Women's team creates a new world record with 22 consecutive ODI wins

Australian Women’s team shattered world record with their win against New Zealand Women in the first ODI of the three-match series played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. They have now won 22 ODIs in a row, surpassing the previous record of 21 straight wins set by Aussie Men. Earlier in the day, the visiting captain Meg Lanning won the toss and invited the Kiwi team to bat first. The home team lost their first wicket in form of opener Hayley Jensen who bagged a duck.

The White Ferns opener Lauren Down struck her maiden half-century to stabilize the team’s batting in the first innings. However, other batters kept getting out at regular intervals. Lauren Down scored 90 runs off 134 balls, which included 8 fours. Captain Amy Satterthwaite and Amelia Kerr also played vital knocks for the team. New Zealand got all out for 212 runs in 48.5 overs. For the visitors, Megan Schutt picked up 4 wickets for 32 runs in her 9 overs. Nicola Carey also bowled brilliantly taking 3 wickets for 34 runs.

Chasing this total, the Aussie team had few hiccups in the start as they lost the first two wickets for 37 runs. However, allrounder Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner played superb knocks to ensure victory for the team. The visiting side chased down the target in 38.3 overs winning by 6 wickets. Megan Schutt was adjudged player of the match for her wonderful performance.

Most consecutive ODI wins

Aussie Women’s winning streak of 22 ODIs is now the longest ever in both men’s and women’s cricket. They have won 22 ODIs on the trot from March 2018 to April 2021. They last lost an ODI game back in October 2017. The invincible team will now have a chance to carry their winning streak further in the upcoming ODI games.

Before them, this record was held by the Australian Men’s team who won 21 consecutive ODIs from January 2003 to May 2003. The Aussie Women had earlier registered 17 and 16 consecutive ODI victories back in the late 90s and early 2000. Apart from the Aussie men’s and women’s teams, the Indian Women’s cricket team has 21 straight wins to their honour in the 50-over format. They created this record of wins from Feb 2016 to May 2017.
