Stats: Bangladesh's Towhid Hridoy scores three consecutive centuries in Youth ODI matches

2019 has been a year to remember for the Bangladesh batsman Towhid Hridoy who has been amongst runs for the Under-19 team. He was the top run-getter of the Tri-Nation U19s tournament held in England earlier this year. Hridoy scored 320 runs across 8 innings at an average of 80 with the help a hundred and two fifties. Later in the Youth ODI series on New Zealand tour, the right-hander amassed 198 runs in five games at an average of 49.5 with two fifties.

Towhid Hridoy improvised his numbers in the ongoing home ODI series against Sri Lanka Under-19s. The soon to be 19-year-old amassed a record 431 runs in only four innings. The first match of the series was abandoned due to rain. In the 2nd match, he struck an unbeaten 56-ball 82 during a 210-run chase in 31 overs. Hridoy followed it with an unbeaten 123 in his team’s 161-run win that helped them take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The home team sealed the series in the 4th match itself as Towhid struck yet another century. He scored 115 from 120 balls to help Bangladesh chase down the target of 261 with 16 balls to spare. Bangladesh’s No.4 created history with his 3rd successive century of the series on Tuesday. He scored 111 from 102 balls with three fours and five maximums as Bangladesh U19s finished on 283/7, a potential match-winning total.

Here are the records that Towhid Hridoy achieved during the series against Sri Lanka Under-19s:

1 – Towhid Hridoy became the first player in Youth ODI history to smash centuries in three consecutive innings. As many as ten players scored centuries in back to back innings before Towhid but none ended up with three in a row.

3 – Towhid also became the first player to score three centuries in a bilateral series in Youth ODI cricket. Shikhar Dhawan and Jack Burnham hit three tons apiece in 2004 U19 CWC and 2016 U19 CWC respectively. Gaurav Dhiman also struck three hundreds in the 2005 Afro-Asia Cup.


4 – He now has scored four ODI tons for Bangladesh Under-19s in 2019 as he recorded an unbeaten 104 against England in August. Thus, Towhid Hridoy became only the 3rd player with four Youth ODI tons in a calendar year. Quinton de Kock and Unmukt Chand also hit four centuries each in 2012.

He struck three centuries against the Sri Lankans in this format. Sami Aslam (vs India) and Shubman Gill (vs England) are the other players to hit three Youth ODI tons against a specific opponent.


4 – Hridoy recorded fifty-plus scores in all the four matches in this series which makes him only the 3rd player from Bangladesh to hit four successive 50+ scores in Youth ODI cricket. Mehidy Hasan Miraz during the 2016 U19 World Cup at home and Tanzid Hasan during the recent ODI series in New Zealand registered four consecutive fifties.


5 – The Bangladesh No.4 now has five hundreds in Youth ODI cricket including four in 2019. Only three players have struck as many Youth ODI tons in their career. Pakistan’s Sami Aslam hit a record six centuries while India’s Unmukt Chand scored five hundreds in only 21 innings.


431 – Towhid Hridoy finishes the series with 431 runs which are the most by any player in a bilateral ODI series in Youth Cricket. Haseeb Hameed’s 389 runs in the 5-match ODI series at home against South Africa Under-19s in 2014 were the previous most.

Overall, only Shikhar Dhawan (505 runs in 7 innings during the 2004 U19 CWC) and Brett Williams (471 runs in 9 innings during the 1988 U19 CWC) scored more than Hridoy in a Youth ODI series/tournament.

In fact, the 431 runs by Hridoy are also the most runs while batting four or fewer innings in an ODI series/tournament (Men/Women/Youth). Chris Gayle struck 424 runs in the home ODI series against England this year across four innings.


1001 – Towhid became the first player to aggregate 1000 runs in a calendar year in Youth ODI matches. He has scored 1001 runs from 20 matches in 2019 at an average of 77 with help of four centuries and six fifties.


1510 – Towhid now has amassed 1501 runs from 40 innings in the Youth ODI cricket. He is only the 3rd player to score over 1500 runs in this format. Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto and Pakistan’s Sami Aslam are ahead of Hridoy with 1820 and 1695 runs respectively.
