Guyana Amazon Warriors made it to the final of the CPL for the record 5th time as they defeated Barbados Tridents on Sunday night in the 1st qualifier. Their opener Brandon King was all over the Barbados bowlers especially in the last five overs. King raced to his fifty off 36 balls and needed 23 deliveries more to raise his maiden T20 hundred.
Brandon remained unbeaten throughout the innings scoring a record 132* off 72 balls which included 11 maximums and ten fours. Guyana finished with 218/3 in their 20 overs thanks to King’s effort. They scored 98 of those runs in the last five overs. Tridents kept losing wickets in the big chase and could only post 188/8 in their 20 overs.
All the statistical highlights from the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ big win in the Qualifier 1:
2 – Brandon King recorded only the 2nd CPL hundred for Guyana Amazon Warriors. Shimron Hetmyer scored exactly 100 against Jamaica Tallawahs last year. This is also the 2nd CPL ton which the Barbados Tridents has conceded. Kieron Pollard scored 104 for St Lucia Stars in the previous edition versus the same opponent.
3 – Brandon King became only the 3rd player to smash a hundred in a CPL playoff match. Glenn Phillips scored 103 for Jamaica Tallawahs in last year’s Eliminator against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots while Andre Russell scored exactly 100 also for Jamaica in the 2nd qualifier of the 2016 edition against Trinbago Knight Riders.
5 – The Guyana Amazon Warriors have made it to the final five times in seven seasons. Trinbago Knight Riders have qualified for the finals in three seasons and will be part of the 2nd qualifier later this week. Only Guyana and Trinidad have qualified for the playoffs in all the seven seasons of the CPL. However, the Amazon Warriors are yet to win a final while TKR team has three titles.
11 – Brandon King struck 11 sixes during his unbeaten ton on Sunday; the 5th instance of a player hitting 11 or more sixes in a CPL inning. Russell struck 13 maximums during his century against TKR last year which is the only time any player has hit more than 11 sixes in a CPL game.
30 – A total of 30 sixes were hit by both sides in this match; the 3rd most number of sixes record during a CPL game. The last two instances were recorded during this edition only – 37 by Patriots-Tallawahs in Basseterre and 35 by Tallawahs-TKR in Kingston.
132* – The unbeaten 132 by Brandon King is now the highest individual score in the history of Caribbean Premier League. The previous highest CPL score is 121* by Andre Russell for Jamaica against TKR last season. King aggregated 106 runs via boundaries during this knock; the most by any player in a CPL inning.
Andre Russell’s unbeaten 121 against TKR last year included 102 runs through boundaries. King, the opener, batted 72 balls for his 132* which is the longest CPL innings in terms of balls faced.
218/3 – Guyana Amazon Warriors’ total of 218/3 is now their joint-highest total in the CPL. They posted 218/6 against Jamaica Tallawahs earlier this season. This is also the first-ever 200+ total in a CPL playoff match. The Tallawahs’ total of 195/5 in the 2nd qualifier of the 2016 edition against Trinbago Knight Riders is the previous highest total in a CPL playoff.
9,014 – Shoaib Malik completed 9,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket in this match when on 18. He is the 4th player and the first from Asia to amass 9,000 runs in the T20 format.
