Canada put on some brilliant performances during the T20 World Cup Americas Qualifiers where they finished unbeaten and secured their place in the 2020 T20 CWC Qualifiers. They continued their dominance in the ongoing inaugural tournament of the League A in Men’s CWC Challenge. Canada began the tournament with victories over Vanuatu and Malaysia respectively; both by big margins where their skipper Navneet Dhaliwal turned out to be the player of the match.

In the game against the hosts Malaysia on Thursday, the Canada team smashed 408/7 in their 50 overs. Captain Dhaliwal scored 140 from only 94 balls with 13 sixes while Ravinderpal Singh pushed the total past 400 with his quick-fire 46-ball 94 that included nine maximums. They thus became only the 2nd associate team after U.A.E (412/4 vs Argentina in 2007) to record 400+ total.

Canada’s total was boosted with as many as 28 sixes which are the most by any team in a List A match. Thus, they surpassed the record jointly held by Jamaica and Western Australia with 27 sixes apiece. The record for most sixes in a team inning in ODIs is 25 which was set by England during this year’s World Cup game against Afghanistan. Since this tournament doesn’t have ODI status, England’s record remains intact.

During the 2016/17 Regional Super50 semi-final against Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica finished with 434/4 in their 50 overs. The top four of Chadwick Walton (117 with 7 sixes), Steven Taylor (88 with 5 sixes), Jermaine Blackwood (108* with 6 sixes) and Rovman Powell (95 with 9 sixes) contributed to Jamaica’s total. The four batsmen collectively hit 27 sixes to break the record held by Central Districts during the 2014/15 Ford Trophy match.

In the game against Canterbury, the Central Districts were bowled out for 405 and a total of 26 sixes were hit. Opener Jamie How compiled a 99-ball 117 with help of 14 maximums. Jamaica’s record was levelled in 2018 by Western Australia during the JLT One-Day Cup match against Queensland. They were bowled out for 387 in 47 overs where D’Arcy Short hit a mammoth 257. The left-hander alone hit a record 23 sixes while the remaining contributed four maximums to the record.
