Stats: Fastest players to complete 5000 runs in ODI cricket

Kane Williamson’s century in the Wellington ODI might have come in the losing cause but the knock will go down as one of the best knocks in the ODI format. Chasing England’s total of 234 on a slow track, New Zealand were going well due to a 68-run stand for the 2nd wicket in 92 balls between Colin Munro and Williamson. A great catch by Ben Stokes to send back dangerous Munro for 49 gave an opening in the game with the spinners bowling to the new batsmen.

Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid unsettled the chase to reduce the hosts from 80/1 to 103/6 by the 25th over. But Williamson’s 96-run stand for the 7th wicket with Mitchell Santner put them back on the top. Chris Woakes affected a run out to dismiss the left-hander and also got rid of Tim Southee to make the chase tough for the home side. The equation came down to 15 runs in the final over where the Kiwi skipper managed only ten runs against some well-executed yorkers.

Williamson came into the game after recovering from a hamstring injury and 4985 runs in the ODI format in his tally. When on 15, the 27-year-old became only the 6th player from New Zealand to complete 5000 runs in the ODI format. Overall, he is the 83rd player in the World with 5000 ODI runs. Williamson needed 119 innings to the milestone which made him the quickest among the New Zealand players. Martin Guptill (132 innings) was the quickest to complete 5000 ODI runs among the previous five Kiwi players.

Among the 83 players in the World with 5000 ODI runs in Men’s Cricket, only four players needed less than 119 innings to reach the milestone. South Africa’s Hashim Amla needed 104 innings to reach 5000 ODI runs; 13 innings lesser than the next quickest. Sir Vivian Richards and Virat Kohli took 114 innings while Brian Lara needed 118 innings to complete the 5000 ODI run milestone. Williamson stands at 5th in the terms of matches taken as the 3rd ODI against England was his 125th ODI match.
