Virat Kohli’s never-ending form in the ODI format was one of the key reasons behind India’s 5-1 win in the 6-match ODI series against South Africa. The Indian skipper amassed a total of 558 runs in the series to become the first player with the 500-run mark in a bilateral ODI series. Starting the series without an ODI hundred in South Africa, Kohli ended the series with three hundreds to extend his ODI hundreds tally to 35.
His domination helped India to dethrone South Africa and become the No.1 in ICC ODI Rankings for the teams and also retain his No.1 spot in the Batsmen rankings. This series helped Kohli rewrite his career-best ratings as he touched the 900-mark for the first time finishing with 909 points. Thus, he also became the first Indian to breach the barrier of 900 rating points in the ODI Rankings. Sachin Tendulkar registered 887 ratings in the 1998 year which Kohli surpassed long back.
By topping the run-getters charts in the Test series, Kohli registered his best rating of 912 in the Test rankings which is the 2nd highest for an Indian behind Sunil Gavaskar’s 916 ratings. With 912 and 909 ratings in Tests and ODI rankings, Kohli became only the 5th player in the history with 900+ points in both Test and ODI rankings and the 2nd to have 900+ in both formats at the same time. AB de Villiers touched 900 points in both formats during the Cricket World Cup in March 2015.
Kohli’s 909 points are the 7th highest in the all-time rating points in ODI rankings for the batsmen. Sir Vivian Richards’ 935 rating in 1985 is the highest for any player. The 909 ratings of Kohli are also the most for any batsman in ODI rankings in over 26 years. Australia’s Dean Jones had his highest rating of 918 in March 1991. Kohli currently firmed at the top of ICC ODI Rankings for the batsmen with a 65-point lead over the next best AB de Villiers (844). Only three other players have a rating of 800+ at the moment in ODI batsmen rankings with the 2nd best among Indians being 799 of Rohit Sharma.
