While the spotlight of the T20 Blast on Friday was over the Roses derby, Northamptonshire and Birmingham Bears played their skins out in a high-scoring thriller. After being sent to bat, Northants hit the home team bowlers all over the park in Edgbaston. Richard Levi smashed an unbeaten 52-ball 95 with eight fours and six sixes while Joshua Cobb raced to a 35-ball 61 with four fours and four sixes. A total of 23 fours and 12 sixes in Northampton’s innings saw them posting their highest T20 score of 231/5.

Birmingham lost the big-hitting Ed Pollock and the limited-overs sensation Sam Hain early. However, Ian Bell countered the Northampton bowlers sharing a 171-run stand in just 85 balls with Adam Hose (64 off 39 balls) to bring the target in their reach. Bell, who scored a brilliant 131 off 62 balls, hit 11 fours and seven sixes before getting out in the final over when they needed ten runs. Colin de Grandhomme hit a six on the 4th ball of final over but got out on next ball. Only a single came on the last ball as the game ended in a Tie and both teams shared the points.

Thus, this game became the highest scoring Tied match ever in the history of Twenty20 cricket. The previous highest scoring Tied T20 game was the 2010 Christchurch T20I between New Zealand and Australia. Both the teams made 214 in that game before the hosts won the Super Over to ensure Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten century didn’t go in vain. McCullum scored 116 in just 57 balls that included 12 fours and eight sixes.

The 2010 Zimbabwe Domestic T20 game between Westerns and Centrals was the other Tied T20 game with 200+ totals. Interestingly, both Northamptonshire and Birmingham have made 231 for the loss of five wickets. The previous high scoring Tie with both the teams losing the same number of wickets was recorded in the 2015 IPL. Both Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab made 191/6 in the game played in Ahmedabad which was won by KXIP in the Super Over.
