Rishabh Pant, who had a dream start to his Test career both with the bat and the gloves, conceded only six byes in his maiden Test in Nottingham that India won. However, trouble began for the young keeper from the Southampton Test where Pant couldn’t cope with the ball that was moving a lot. He conceded 30 byes during the game including 23 of them on the very first day. Things got even worse in the final Test match as he has already conceded 35 by end of the 3rd day.

The keeper-batsman from Delhi yielded as many as 26 byes in the first innings and nine more in the 43 overs of the play in the second half of the third day. With the four byes on the final ball of the 41st over of England’s innings, Indian wicket-keepers have conceded as many as 101 byes in this Pataudi Trophy thus far. Out of those, 65 have come in the last two Test matches but half of them were well out of Pant’s reach.

Dinesh Karthik, who was dropped after featuring in the first two Test matches, allowed 30 byes in those matches. In the first Test in Birmingham, Karthik gave away 19 runs as byes having also dropped a few catches and 11 more in the only innings England batted in the Lord’s Test. The 101 byes India conceded in this series are the most by them in a Test series. The previous highest tally was 84 during the 5-match Test series in the Caribbean in 1970/71.

By conceding 101 byes, India became only the 3rd team to concede over 100 byes in a single Test series. England gave away more than 100 as byes in four different series while South Africa did it in the 1909/10 home series against England. The recent most occurrence of the five instances when a team allowed 100 byes in a Test series was 111 by England in the 2008/09 series in Windies. India became only the 2nd team to concede 100 byes in a Test series in England after 103 byes by the hosts in 1934 Ashes.
