Stats: Indian captains with lowest toss win% in Tests

India is currently up against England in the third match of the five-match Test series at Headingley. The first Test between the two teams resulted in a draw as rain played a spoilsport at Nottingham. However, the second Test was won by India at the Lord’s as tail and lower order shone for the team in the best manner possible.

Currently, the third Test is on at Headingley and one thing which never fails to bag attention is Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s luck with the toss. Kohli has bagged a lot of criticism and trolls owing to a stroke of poor luck with the toss. However, moving into the Test at Leeds, it was Kohli who had the toss in his favour against English skipper Joe Root.

As Kohli won the toss, he chose to come up with the willow first. Going by the match situation so far, it can’t be said that the decision taken by the Indian skipper went very well in their favour as the team has already lost two wickets and is currently playing at 19/2. As India showed up with the bat, the wickets started raining for the home side. In form, KL Rahul came and went in no time and it was followed by Cheteshwar Pujara who is already struggling with a rough patch.

Talking about Kohli’s luck with the toss, it can be said that he has had a big losing streak but actual stats tell the other part of the story. It has to be noted when the win per cent of other Indian captains in Tests is taken into consideration, Kohli isn’t on the lowest pedestal. In fact, Kohli has a win percent of 43.75 where Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni have a toss win percent of 42.86 and 43.33 respectively.

Former legendary skipper Sunil Gavaskar has the highest toss win percentage among Indian skippers (who are lowest on this list) which is 46.81. Since Virat Kohli is currently active, it remains to be seen if he will be able to change his fortunes with the toss going forward.
