The Indian pacer raked up a record 15 wickets in just five games to bag the Man of the Series award.

It needs some effort to gain 136 points and move from No. 31 to No. 4 in ICC ODI bowlers’ rankings. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah did just that in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah raked up a record 15 wickets in just five games to bag the Man of the Series award as the Indians completed a 5-0 whitewash over the home team.

Bumrah began the series with two wickets in the first ODI and picked up a 4-wicket haul in the next game. He followed it with his maiden ODI five-wicket haul in the third ODI to help India clinch the series. In the last two games, Bumrah picked up two wickets each to finish one of the greatest ever series performances by a bowler in the ODI history.

His series haul of 15 wickets is the joint 2nd most by an Indian in a bilateral ODI series. Amit Mishra picked up 18 wickets in a 5-match ODI series in 2013 in Zimbabwe while Javagal Srinath also picked up 18 wickets during the 7-match series in 2002/03 played in New Zealand.

Most wickets by an Indian in a bilateral ODI series:

Bumrah’s effort is joint 3rd best for any bowler in a 5 or fewer match bilateral ODI series. His tally is bettered by only Mishra (18 wickets in Zimbabwe) and Rashid Khan’s 16 wickets in the Afghanistan-Ireland series in Noida this year. Among pacers, Bumrah’s 15 wickets in this series are the most by any fast bowler as he went past Clint McKay’s 14 wickets. New Zealand pacer Andre Adams picked 14 wickets in four matches he played in 2002/03 7-match series against India.

Most wickets by any bowler in a five or fewer match ODI series:

The 23-year-old pacer broke the record for the most wickets in a bilateral ODI series in Sri Lanka by going past Chris Woakes’ 14 wickets in the 7-match series in 2014. Considering the ODI tournaments as well, the Indian pacer stands behind Shahid Afridi as the Pakistan leg-spinner picked up 17 wickets in the six matches he played in Sri Lanka during the 2011 ODI World Cup hosted in the sub-continent.
