New Zealand put up a horrendous batting show against Bangladesh in the first T20I of the five-match series. Electing to bat first at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, the Kiwis never got going and lost wickets at regular intervals. In fact, nine of their 11 batters couldn’t reach the six-run mark. As a result, New Zealand got bundled out for their joint-lowest totals in T20Is (60).

With prominent names like Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson not being in the ranks, the Kiwis did have a depleted batting order. However, such a collapse was beyond the expectations of many. New Zealand were on the back foot straight away with opener Rachin Ravindra getting out on the third ball of the game. The likes of Tom Blundell, Will Young, and Colin de Grandhomme couldn’t do much either.

Skipper Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls tried to stabilize the innings by adding 34 runs for the fifth wickets. However, Latham was dismissed in the 11th over and since then it was one-way traffic. The visitors lost their last six wickets inside 17 runs and got unfolded for just 60. With the high-voltage T20 World Cup being over just a month away, this performance is certainly a cause of concern for the visitors.

For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman was the pick of the bowlers as he took three wickets in the game. Besides him, Nasum Ahmed, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mohammad Saifuddin got two wickets apiece. From the New Zealand camp, only Latham and Nicholls reached double figures, scoring 18 each. This way New Zealand registered their joint-lowest total in the shortest international format.

Overall, it was the seventh instance of New Zealand getting skittled out inside 100 runs in a T20I match. Notably, 60 is also the lowest innings total registered by any team against Bangladesh. Hence, the Kiwis named many unwanted records with this performance. With the T20 World Cup taking place in UAE, New Zealand batters must find a way to counter spin.
