Mayank Agarwal took the 2017/18 Indian domestic season by storm with some exceptional batting displays in all the three formats. His season began from an unbeaten triple century against Maharashtra just after bagging a pair against Hyderabad. He followed the big innings with centuries in consecutive games and twin hundreds against Railways in the Ranji Trophy. Mayank amassed over 1000 runs in the November month alone to become the first Indian to achieve the feat.

After a couple of fifties in the T20 tournament, Mayank showed brilliant consistency in the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he scored seven 80+ scores in eight innings. He finished the tournament with 723 runs and became the first Indian to score 700+ runs in a List A tournament. In this process, he also became the first player to score 2000 runs in an Indian domestic season. However, Mayank couldn’t finish the season on high with only 91 runs to his name in the last four innings.

He aggregated 80 runs in the three innings during the Deodhar Trophy and made only 11 runs in the high-scoring Irani Cup game against Vidarbha. Thus, the Karnataka batsman fell short of breaking a rare record of India. With the 2253 runs in all formats this season, Mayank scored the 2nd most runs in an Indian season in professional cricket (FC + List A + T20s). He ended up 45 runs short of Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 2298 runs during the 1994/95 season.

Sachin’s runs in the 1994/95 season came in only 30 innings compared to Mayank’s 36 innings. He also scored 441 runs in eight innings outside India in the 1994/95 season. He was also the first player to score 2000+ runs in an Indian season across all formats. VVS Laxman in 2000/01 and Wasim Jaffer in the 2008/09 season aggregated 2000 runs in the Indian season. During the 2016/17 season, Cheteshwar Pujara became the first player to score 2000 runs in an Indian first-class season. He aggregated 2159 runs across formats in the 33 innings he batted.
