Stats: Most sixes in International cricket by Indian players

Rohit Sharma finally turned up with the bat in the South African tour with a brilliant century in the crucial 5th ODI in Port Elizabeth. The Indian opener scored only 118 runs in eight innings on this tour coming into the game with the best score of 47 runs. He nearly scored those runs in one innings with a 118-ball 115 that included 11 fours and four sixes. The 30-year-old put his footwork problems aside to score his maiden hundred on the South African soil.

Ever since becoming an opener in 2013, Rohit Sharma developed his six hitting ability as he hit nearly 200 sixes across formats in this period and also tops the sixes charts in the ODI format in the last five years. Rohit sent a delivery out of the park early on the innings in Kagiso Rabada’s bowling, who dismissed him six out of eight occasions on this tour before this game. He hit three more during his long innings.

The fourth six of the innings was Rohit’s 57th six in International cricket in 2017/18 season which are the most for any player in a season. He broke Martin Guptill’s record who hit 56 sixes in the 2015/16 season. Rohit appears twice in the top five list of most sixes in a season as he had 49 sixes in the 2013/14 season. The vice-captain of India‘s limited-overs teams hit as many as 67 sixes in 2017 by with he broke AB de Villiers’ record of most sixes in International cricket in a calendar year.

His 4th and final six of the innings was Rohit’s 265th six across all formats which are the 2nd most by an Indian in International cricket after MS Dhoni’s 338 sixes. Rohit also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 264 with that six and stands at No.7 in the overall list. He hit a total of 169 sixes in this format and might not take long to enter the elite list of players with 200 ODI sixes which is graced by only six players.
