Ben Stokes fittingly picked Maharashtra Divas to script a stunning win for the Rising Pune Supergiant with his stellar maiden T20 hundred. In doing so, Stokes joined Hashim Amla and David Warner in the list of overseas players to have scored a ton in the ongoing season of the IPL.
The England all-rounder’s century was the 46th hundred in the history of the IPL. Surprisingly, 29 of these hundreds have been scored by overseas batsmen. Brendon McCullum set the inaugural IPL on fire with a devastating knock of 158 not out in the curtain-raiser. 2008 turned out to be a lucrative year for batsmen in search of 100s, as it witnessed another 5 centuries following McCullum’s. As many as 4 Australians joined the party to bring up their maiden IPL hundreds in ’08.
South Africa’s AB de Villiers was the lone century-scorer in 2009 when the IPL travelled to AB’s own backyard in the Rainbow nation. Playing for the Delhi Daredevils, he made his way to an undefeated 105 against the Chennai Super Kings. McCullum’s innings remained a long-standing record in the IPL, only to be smashed in 2013 by the one and only Chris Gayle. He decimated a Pune Warriors India bowling attack to score a 66-ball 175. His mammoth innings included 13 fours and 17 monstrous sixes.
2014 saw another loner in the list of hundreds. West Indian Lendl Simmons, representing the Mumbai Indians finished on an unbeaten 100 against the Kings XI Punjab in Mohali.
In their second season of the tournament, the Rising Pune Supergiant have had two hundreds, scored from the bat of current skipper Steve Smith, and most recently, Ben Stokes. Interestingly, it was the Gujarat Lions who were on the receiving end of both RPS individual hundreds. Smith scored a 54-ball 101 against the Lions last year at the MCA Stadium.
The Australians have clearly dominated in the list of overseas IPL hundreds. Out of the 29 centuries scored by overseas players, 11 are against an Australian’s name. David Warner stands out amongst some of the bigger Aussie players to have brought up an IPL century with three 100s under his belt. Adam Gilchrist and Shane Watson have two IPL centuries apiece.
