Taking all ten wickets in an innings is a rare instance as it happened only on two occasions in the 141-year-old Test cricket and never in the ODI format. Till date, the most wickets a player took in an ODI game is eight which has happened only once. The same feat is also rare in the List A cricket as only one player happen to take an 8-wicket haul in the last seven years. The rare 8-fer was recorded by the 19-year-old pacer Yeasin Arafat in Bangladesh’s 50-over competition.

Representing the Gazi Group Cricketers team, Yeasin opened the bowling against the Abahani Limited in Fatullah. The Gazi team chose to field first in the 55th match of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. Arafat dismissed Saif Hassan (1) and Nazmul Hossain Shanto (0) in his 2nd over and sent back Nasir Hossain and Mosaddek Hossain for ducks in his 3rd over. Tipu Sultan claimed the wicket of Anamul Haque (10) as Abahani lost five wickets at 12. The youngster recorded figures of 23/4 in his first spell of five overs.

After Tipu Sultan broke a 53-run stand between Mohammad Mithun (40) and Manan Sharma (46), Yeasin claimed the wicket of Mashrafe Mortaza to complete his maiden 5-wicket haul. Interestingly, Mortaza took four wickets in four consecutive deliveries in the same tournament last week. In the same over, Sunzamul Islam and Ariful Islam got out for ducks as Arafat claimed seven wickets. He finished with 8/40 in 8.1 overs after dismissing Manan Sharma to wrap up Abahani for just 113/10. Thus, 19-year-old became the first Bangladesh player to take an 8-wicket haul in List A cricket.

Abdur Razzak registered figures of 7/17 for Bangladesh ‘A’ against Zimbabwe ‘A’ back in 2003/04. Arafat also became the 11th player and the first since 2011 to take 8-wicket haul in the List A cricket. His figures of 8/40 are the 8th best in this format. Kevin Stoute took 8/52 in July 2010 for West Indies ‘A’ against Lancashire. Chaminda Vaas (8/19 against Zimbabwe in 2001/02) is the only player to achieve this feat in ODI cricket. Manchester’s Old Trafford witness two List A 8-fers including the first ever by Keith Boyce in 1971. Colombo witnessed three 8-wicket hauls in the format at three different venues.
