Afghanistan’s bowling was the hot topic ahead of their Test debut against India but their spinners, who were expected to be trump cards, turned out to be ineffective with the red ball. The Afghan pacers outclassed the spinners taking five wickets between themselves while the three spinners with the exposure in IPL collected only four wickets. Rashid Khan, who was nation’s hope coming into the game, was taken for a record 154 runs for two wickets in the 34.5 overs he bowled.

Here are the forgettable numbers that the Afghanistan bowlers ended up with in their first outing in Test cricket:

1 – Rashid Khan and Wafadar Momand conceded 154 and 100 runs respectively is the first instance of two teenagers in the same Test conceded 100+ runs in an innings on their debut. Overall, this is the 10th instance of two teenagers conceding 100+ runs in an innings in the same Test.


4.52India’s run-rate in their first innings is the 2nd highest for any side in a Test innings on Indian soil (Min: 600 balls). India had a RR of 4.58 when they scored 495 against Windies in the 2013 Wankhede Test.


18y 133d – Wafadar is the 7th youngest and 5th youngest pacer to concede 100 runs in an innings on Test debut. He is also the 2nd youngest to concede 100 runs in a Test innings since the start of 2006. Mohammad Amir was 17 years and 257 days when he conceded 101 runs in the 2009 Boxing Day Test against Australia.


19y 267d – Rashid Khan became the 26th bowler to concede over 150 runs in an innings on Test debut. He is the 2nd youngest among those 26 players behind only India’s Ramakant Desai (19y 231d) in 1959 Delhi Test against Windies. Rashid is overall the 5th youngest player to concede over 150+ runs in a Test inning.


2/154 – He became the first player to concede 150+ in an innings in country’s inaugural Test. The previous most runs conceded by any bowler in his team’s inaugural Test was 134 runs by Amir Elahi in Pakistan’s first Test match in 1952 against India.


329 – A total of 329 runs were conceded by Afghanistan’s teenagers during India’s first innings (Rashid, Wafadar and Mujeeb Ur Rahman). These are the 2nd most runs conceded in a Test innings by bowlers aged less than 20. Zimbabwe’s teenagers conceded 364 in Sri Lanka’s first innings in the 2004 Bulawayo Test.


474 – The total of 474 runs conceded by Afghanistan is the highest by the 12 Test nations in their inaugural Test match. Bangladesh yielded 429 in their maiden Test against India in 2000.
