Stats: Scores of '99' by a batsman in T20s in India

The batsman left stranded on the score of 99 is a very rare instance in international cricket. But the T20 cricket in India has so far seen five batsmen either getting out or remaining unbeaten on 99 missing out on a well-deserved ton. The recent name to add to the list is of Prashant Chopra from Himachal Pradesh in the ongoing Zonal league of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. However, the only batsman to be dismissed on 99 in India in T20s is none other than Virat Kohli.

Prashant opened the innings for his team against Haryana and played beautifully. He batted really well and held the innings for his side together. But was very unfortunate to stay unbeaten on 99 off just 64 deliveries as Himachal scored 194 runs after 20 overs. Though the game went down the wire with Haryana also scoring 194 as the thriller was ended in a tie. The result of the match was decided in a one-over eliminator then in which Haryana could score only two runs which were chased down easily by Himachal.

Other batsmen on the charts

Prashant Chopra also became the fourth batsman to be left stranded on 99 batting first in the history of T20 games played in India. JP Duminy is the only batsman on this list to miss out on a ton by just a solitary run while chasing. He did it for Cape Cobras against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Champions League T20 in 2009. Mukul Dagar of Haryana also has experienced the feeling of remaining not-out on 99 against Punjab during the same tournament (Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy) in 2010.

Prominent Indian players to feature in this list are Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli. The former is tipped as one of the most consistent players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but has remained unbeaten on 99 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. The current Indian captain Kohli would have scored his first IPL century in the same year if not for him being unable to score than eluding one run. The match was against Delhi Daredevils when he was dismissed on 99.
