Steve Smith returned in full flow after suffering a concussion in the Lord’s Test as he smashed a brilliant double hundred at the Oval Trafford. The former Australian skipper continued to frustrate the English bowlers scoring 211 from only 319 deliveries. He shared a 116-run stand for the 3rd wicket with Marcus Labuschagne after an early loss. The partnership between him and Tim Paine for the 6th wicket was of 145 that took away the game from the hosts.

3 – Steve Smith has scored 500+ runs in an Ashes series three times. Only Sir Donald Bradman (5) and Sir Jack Hobbs (3) had as many as three Ashes series of 500+ runs. Smith is the only one to do it three consecutive series.
3 – Smith is also the 3rd player to score as many as three double centuries in the Ashes. Sir Donald Bradman (8) and Wally Hammond (4) are other two players with three or more double tons in the Ashes but none of them has scored in three successive series like Smith.
8 – Smith has scored 8 consecutive fifty-plus scores in the Ashes; two more than the next best streak recorded by Mike Hussey. In fact, Smith has converted those 8 knocks into 75+ scores while no other player has more than four 75+ consecutive scores in the Ashes.
11 – Number of hundreds in the Ashes for Steve Smith; the 3rd most by any player. Only Sir Donald Bradman (19) and Sir Jack Hobbs (12) had more Ashes tons than Smith. In England, this was Smith’s 6th Ashes ton making him the 3rd player to score as many tons after Sir Donald Bradman (11) and Steve Waugh (7). No England batsman has more than five Ashes tons at home.
