Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League has gone to achieve unprecedented success in global cricket scenario. Over its illustrious journey, the tournament has also accommodated several stars and match-winners.

The league is currently amid its thirteenth edition which is being played in the UAE owing to Covid-19 pandemic. And, the most recent encounter of the T20 carnival was between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals where the former registered a comprehensive 37-run victory at Dubai International Stadium.

Royals, in pursuit of a target of 175, fizzled out just on 137 runs and handed KKR their first victory of this year’s IPL edition. Following their defeat, Royals’ star and India international Robin Uthappa etched an unwanted record to his name. Uthappa now leads the list of players ending on the losing side on most occasions in the history of IPL, tweeted statistician Rajneesh Gupta.

In 180 IPL matches, the 34-year-old has been on the losing side 91 times. Uthappa was tied with RCB skipper Virat Kohli (90) before RR slumped to a defeat against KKR. Kohli, in 180 IPL games, has been a part of the losing side on 90 occasions. Notably, the current India skipper has been associated with RCB since the inaugural edition.

Dinesh Karthik is third in the list with 87 defeats

Uthappa, on the other hand, has plied his trade for multiple IPL sides. The right-hander has previously been a part of Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors and Kolkata Knight Riders. After being released by KKR ahead of the IPL 2020 auction, Uthappa was snapped up by RR for INR 3 crore.

The Karnataka-born batsman is also amongst the leading run-scorers in the IPL. He is currently sitting at the ninth position, having amassed more than 4000 runs including 24 half-centuries and a highest score of 87.

The third in the list of players ending on the losing side is current KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik, with 87 defeats under his belt in 185 games. The most successful skipper of the tournament– Rohit Sharma– is fourth on the list with 85 losses in 191 games. Before shifting his base to the Mumbai franchise, Rohit was a part of the now-defunct Deccan Chargers side.

The fifth position is tied between two experienced players– AB de Villiers and Amit Mishra. Having played in the IPL for multiple franchises so far, both have been a part of the losing side on 79 occasions in 157 games.
