Virat Kohli’s overseas record has become so good of late that people haven’t talked much about his record at home. Kohli came into the Test series against the Windies with 879 runs in eight Tests and 1774 runs across all formats in 2018 even before he played a game in India. The Indian skipper returned home with his 24th Test century in his first outing against the Windies. He was the top scorer for India with his 139-run knock.

This was Kohli’s 5th consecutive fifty-plus score at home that included four centuries with two of them turning out to be double tons. His previous four innings at home in Test cricket read: 50, 243, 213 and 104*.  With 749 runs across these five innings at home, Kohli completed 3000 runs in Test cricket in India that too in only 33 Test matches and 53 innings. He needed 79 runs before the game to complete 3000 Test runs in India.

With the first boundary on the second day’s morning, Kohli reached the milestone and thus became the joint quickest to complete it. He now shares the record with his team-mate Cheteshwar Pujara who got to 3000 Test runs at home in 53 innings during the last year’s Sri Lanka series. However, the No.3 batsman played one match less than Kohli. Both the players better the record held by Sachin Tendulkar who got to 3000 Test runs in India in 55 innings during his 34th Test.

The former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who was the fastest to the milestone during his time taking 56 innings, is now pushed to No.4. However, Azharuddin still holds the records for being the quickest to 1000 Test runs and 2000 Test runs in India taking 13 and 33 innings respectively. In terms of matches taken Virender Sehwag is only behind Pujara and Kohli as he took 34 matches, same as Tendulkar.
