The much-awaited ODI series between India and Australia started in a sensational way with the Aussies pushing the home side into early troubles as they reduced India to 11/3. A brilliant spell of bowling from Nathan Coulter-Nile caused the return of Ajinkya Rahane for five runs and Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey for ducks. The Indian skipper, who had a brilliant year in the ODI format so far, recorded a rare duck in the first ODI at the Chepauk.

Here we look at stats and records created by Virat Kohli with his duck.

1 – MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is the only Indian venue where an Indian captain has scored a duck in ODIs more than once. Gautam Gambhir had bagged a duck in 2010 against New Zealand at this venue. Ahmedabad and Vishakhapatnam also recorded two ODI ducks by Indian captains but at different venues.

2 – Chepauk is only the 2nd venue in International cricket where Virat Kohli got out for a duck more than once. Kohli picked up a duck against Pakistan in 2012 at Chennai in an ODI. He got out for a nought twice at the Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in ODIs.

2 – Number of ducks for Virat Kohli in ODIs this year; he was leading the team on both occasions. He bagged a duck against Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy game. Rahul Dravid in 2006 was the last Indian captain with more than one ducks in ODIs in a calendar year.

2 – This is the 2nd time Nathan Coulter-Nile has dismissed Virat for a duck in professional cricket. Coming into this game, the Indian skipper had 26 ducks but never got out for a nought more than once to any bowler. Coulter-Nile dismissed Kohli in the IPL earlier this year at the Eden Gardens.

2011 – The last instance of an Indian captain bagging a duck in a home ODI game was Virender Sehwag against West Indies at Ahmedabad in 2011. Sehwag got out on the very first ball he faced in the innings.
