Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have faced tough times as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 has crawled towards its business end. The side missed three of its top names in the match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at home on Friday and suffered to a 46-run rare loss before the home crowd. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and spinner-all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja missed the game because of sickness. CSK coach Stephen Fleming later updated the health status of the two Indian players and it was not good news for the Indian fans.

Dhoni had been batting well for the CSK and scoring runs freely and in both the matches that he missed, the CSK faced one-sided defeats. The wicket-keeper-batsman sat out in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier because of a back spasm and on Friday, it was fever that forced him out. Jadeja, too, was down with fever. South African Faf du Plessis also gave the game against the MI a miss. The Indian duo’s ill health will be a concern for the Indian team since they are key members of the World Cup squad that will be heading for England next month.

“They (Dhoni and Jadeja) both are pretty sick… both unwell, virus and bacteria… A lot of teams are struggling at the moment through that,” Fleming was quoted as saying by Times now as he gave an update on the Indian players’ health.

CSK already in playoffs

The CSK have already qualified for the playoffs despite their three defeats in last four games and have some days off before they take on Delhi Capitals at home again in their penultimate encounter. Both Dhoni and Jadeja are expected to recover during the break and come back to guide the team in the tough phase ahead.

“We’re looking forward to the four-day break. It’s probably come one day bit too late. But we’ve got a four-day break now. I think Mumbai benefitted from that (five-day break). We are going to look to do the same now,” the former New Zealand captain added.

Suresh Raina led the CSK in both games in the absence of Dhoni but failed to inspire the team and struggled to score runs as well.
