32-year old left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe has been relieved of his duties in the Big Bash League and has been made to prepare for the upcoming tour of India. O’Keefe was a part of the Australian squad that went ahead and lost 3-0 to the mighty Sri Lankans in the Island nation.

However, it now seems as though the Aussie selectors have had a change of heart. This also sees them becoming one of the most important parts of the Australian side wherein spin has been introduced in tandem. The final Test match in Sydney against Pakistan saw Steve Smith field three spinners including Hilton Cartwright who did not need to bowl.

Pat Howard, the manager of the General Performance went on to state that O’Keefe was very much part of the plans despite his ordinary bowling performance in the Sri Lankan tour. “Post the Sri Lanka tour last year we have been in talks with Cricket NSW and Steve on the best way for him to prepare for the Qantas tour of India,” Howard said.

Howard also went on to state that the injuries the 32-year old has been a part of in recent times also have played a role his selection in the squad as well. “After his recent injuries, which have caused him to miss Sheffield Shield match this season, he has had a lot less red ball match practice than other players that are likely to tour India and it is important he gets as much bowling in the format he is going to play.

Howard finally went on to conclude that O’Keefe’s focus would now be on the upcoming Dubai tour. “His focus will now be on Grade and Futures League cricket before likely being one of the first players to depart for Dubai in late January.”
