Alastair Cook’s flair and finesse as a batsman have enthralled the audience ever since he forayed into international cricket in March 2006 against India in Nagpur. He scored 60 runs in the first innings and then notched his maiden century in white-clothing cricket. He announced himself in his debut appearance for England and ever since he hasn’t looked back by any means.

He went on to haemorrhage runs in Test cricket and steadfastly carved a reputation as a dependable figure in the lineup. However, the last one year hasn’t given him much to cheer. He has strained to score even half-centuries, which can’t be associated with Cook. The veteran has notched over 12,000 runs in 160 matches along with 32 centuries and 56 half-centuries.

An emotional Broad

Last year, the Glouster-born cricketer racked a stupendous double-century against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Apart from that, he hasn’t been able to hit his straps at the top of the order. The left-hander is currently playing in England’s five-match Test series against India. He has batted in seven innings but has got into double figures on six occasions.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t carry on and convert them. In four matches, the 33-year-old has scored 109 runs at an abysmal average of 15.57. His overall Test average has also decreased significantly owing to his lean patch. Recently, the cricketer decided to bid adieu to international cricket. Apart from his illustrious Test career, he also has impressive numbers in limited-overs cricket.

Cook played 92 ODIs and four T20Is in which he has scored 3204 and 61 runs respectively. He will play the fifth and final Test at Kennington in London after which he will bow out. In the meantime, Stuart Broad, who has played plenty of times alongside the batsman, couldn’t hold on to his emotions.  He took to Twitter and wrote, “Not enough words to describe what a legend Cooky is.”
