The India U-19 team scripted history after winning the World Cup for a record 4th time, and they did so without losing a single game on the road. With a lot at stake, both India skipper Prithvi Shaw and vice-captain Shubman Gill were keen to not let this opportunity go. The Men in Blue took on Australia in a high-octane summit clash as the Indians eased to victory. The Prithvi Shaw-led outclassed their opponents with a fine chase after a clinical bowling display to restrict the opponents to a paltry score of 216.
Gill has been the most successful Indian batsman this tournament. The 18-year-old right-handed batsman, who played a pivotal role in the squad, struck three fifties and a hundred to end as the ‘Player of the Tournament.’
Born just before the turn of the millennium, the 19-year-old Gill is one of the brightest prospects of Indian cricket and his performance serves as a testament to that. In the semifinal fixture too, Shubman played a key role by scoring a clinical century against Pakistan. His unbeaten knock of 102 paved the way for India’s victory.
Speaking of his exploits in the recently concluded mega-event, the youngster credited India veteran Yuvraj Singh for guiding and providing him with imperative batting tips in the past. During Gill’s stay at the NCA (National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru), he got to spend some time with Yuvraj which turned out to be of immense help to Gill.
The 19-year-old said, “Yuvi paaji (Yuvraj Singh) gave a lot of guidance when he was at the NCA. He told me things about on and off the field, he gave me tips and batted along with me,”
Gill to ply his trade in the IPL
The latest batting sensation of Indian cricket, Subhman Gill also landed himself a lucrative IPL deal after his batting heroics in the junior World Cup. With a base price of 20 lakhs, Gill was picked almost 10 times his base prices for a whopping 1.8 crores by the KKR franchise. After having U-19 medium-pacer Kamlesh Nagarkoti in their kitty, KKR added another promising talent in Gill.
