Indian cricket history has seen many great players come and go, but Sunil Gavaskar will always have a special place amongst those elite individuals. One of the greatest batsmen to have ever played the game, Gavaskar epitomized courage and strength throughout his career and played a crucial role in India’s 1983 World Cup triumph.

The legendary cricketer turns 69 on Tuesday and there’s no better occasion than this to learn about an interesting story surrounding his birth. Back in 1949, just a couple of years after the nation had attained Independence, another hero was born in Mumbai.

But interestingly, there was a small twist in this story. One of Gavaskar’s uncle who had come to visit him had noticed that there was a small hole in the left ear of the newly born baby. A few days later when he came back to visit, the baby beside Gavaskar’s mother had no hole in the ear.

“The day I was born, one of my uncles came to visit. He noticed that there was a small hole in my left ear. A few days later when he came to visit my mother again, who was in a general ward, picked the baby next to my mother and noticed it wasn’t me. He saw that there was no hole in the ear,” Gavaskar said to Gaurav Kapur in his show “Breakfast with Champions”.

They found me next to a fisherman: Gavaskar

Apparently, the family members searched the entire warden with the help of the hospital workers to search for the baby with a hole in the ear. Incidentally, they found him next to a fisherwoman and they got the baby exchanged. Gavaskar also pointed out that the impact of staying beside that fisherwoman made him fish outside the off-stump on a lot of occasions.

“He said to my mother it’s not our baby, he got switched. Then they went around the entire ward and searched for me. Apparently, they found me next to a fisherwoman. Incidentally, I got out so many times fishing outside the off-stump,” said Gavaskar.
