Albeit Gautam Gambhir didn’t play international cricket for the last couple of years, his fandom hasn’t been affected by any stretch of the imagination. He was one of the major reasons why India were able to win the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup against Pakistan and 50-overs World Cup against Sri Lanka. Apart from that, he was also the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) top-ranked batsman in 2009.
The 37-year-old recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket and put forth the decision in a video, spanning around 11 minutes. The experienced campaigner is currently taking part in Delhi’s Ranji Trophy match against Andhra at Feroz Shah Kotla. The southpaw has had a memorable match thus far. After Andhra put 390 on the board, Gambhir hasn’t flattered to deceive with the bat.
A special day for Gautam
He is currently not out on 92 runs from 154 balls with eight boundaries. He has skipper Dhruv Shorey at the other end. Ahead of next day’s play, he is expected to have butterflies in his stomach as he is eight runs short of a stupendous century. Moreover, the Delhi-born cricketer would also want to win the match for his team, though the chance of the same look bleak with only two days left.
In the meantime, the supporters didn’t leave any stone unturned to make Gambhir happy. Prior to the match, his fans arranged a cake-cutting ceremony for him. A number of them surrounded him and he didn’t let his well-wishers down by any means. He signed a lot of autographs.
People also went on to get themselves clicked with their favourite cricketer. His fans enjoyed every bit of his presence and Gambhir obliged to their wishes. A bouquet was also arranged for Gautam. In the end, the cake came and Gauti happily cut it with a big smile on his face.
