Monday witnessed the conclusion of the matches in the Group A, B, and C of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy 2020-21. Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Baroda ended unbeaten in A, B, and C groups respectively to seal their berths in the quarter-finals. Defending champions Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh now rely on the results of the remaining groups to earn a chance for the knockouts. A total of nine matches were played on Monday with two of them ending in a Tie – Jharkhand vs Hyderabad and Chhattisgarh vs Uttarakhand.
Here are major statistical highlights recorded during the 9th day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2020-21:
1 – 18th January 2021 became the first day to witness multiple Tied matches in Indian Twenty20 history. Before Monday, a total of 21 T20 matches hosted by India ended in a Tie including nine in the SMAT20 Trophy with no two of them coming on the same day.
4 – Narayan Jagadeesan of Tamil Nadu scored his 4th successive fifty in the Twenty20 format during the game against Bengal. Jagadeesan had not scored a fifty in the 23 innings he batted in his T20 career before this streak.
He is now only the 4th player to register T20 career’s first four fifty-plus scores in successive innings. Lee Carseldine (in 2009), Pratham Singh (in 2019) and Pathum Nissanka (in 2019-2020) are the other three such players.
5 – Mandeep Singh became the 5th player with 99* in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy which he recorded on Monday while leading Punjab against Tripura. Mukul Dagar (For Haryana) and Prashant Chopra (For Himachal Pradesh) achieved this score in 2010 and 2018 respectively while Devdutt Padikkal (For Karnataka) and Kedar Devdhar (For Baroda) also made 99* in the ongoing season.
67 – Harpreet Singh Bhatia completed 2000 runs in the Twenty20 format when he reached his individual score of 20 in the game against Uttarakhand while leading Chhattisgarh.
Harpreet needed only 67 innings to complete the milestone which makes him the joint 4th fastest Indian to the milestone. Sachin Tendulkar (59), Suresh Raina (66) and Rishabh Pant (66) got to 2000 T20 runs quicker than Harpreet while KL Rahul also needed 67 innings.
129 – The game between Jharkhand and Hyderabad was the 129th Twenty20 match which Eden Gardens hosted but the first to end in a Tie. The venue has stood host for 130 T20 games till date which is the 8th most number of Twenty20 matches played at any venue.
6010 – Dinesh Karthik completed 6000 runs in the Twenty20 format when he went past his individual score of 37 while leading Tamil Nadu against Bengal. Karthik also completed 5000 T20 runs on Indian soil when he went past 43 making him only the 8th player with the milestone.
