Gloucestershire and Glamorgan took on each other in the South Group fixture of the ongoing T20 Blast 2021 in Bristol, where a thunderous knock from Glenn Phillips guided Gloucestershire to a monstrous total of 216/2 after Chris Cooke, the Glamorgan skipper, invited them to bat first.

In at four in the 10th over, when Gloucestershire had lost both the openers Mile Hammond and Chris Dent, Phillips played a 41-ball blinder that included nine fours and six sixes. He was well-assisted by Benny Howell, who struck 53 of his own with the help of six boundaries and a lone six during an unbeaten 130-run stand for the third wicket.

In an outrageous assault, the most striking stroke off Phillips’ bat came during the 18th over, when he deposited Dan Douthwaite for a giant six over third man with a ridiculous reverse scoop. Exposing all three stumps, Phillips stood well outside the leg stump and quickly shuffled to equip himself to play the reverse. Much to his liking, Douthwaite delivered the ball in the slot as Phillips swatted him within a blink of an eye for a maximum.

Glamorgan fall well short during the chase

Courtesy of Phillips’ carnage, Douthwaite finished with 0/48 from his four overs. In that kind of mood, a century seemed well on cards for the New Zealand batter when he was on 72 by the end of the 18th over. However, a reasonably quiet penultimate over from James Weighell meant that he needed 24 to get into three figures with six balls remaining. Despite facing all the deliveries of final over from Timm van der Guten, Phillips remained on unbeaten 94. However, he ensured that his team had runs that would prove far beyond the opponents’ reach.

Set 217 to win, Glamorgan lost their opener Nick Selman cheaply before Colin Ingram and David Lloyd added 54 for the second wicket. With an ever-mounting required rate, the only thing they could not have afforded was losing wickets in a cluster. That is precisely what they did as they lost both Ingram and Lloyd apart from Weighell even before the halfway mark. Lloyd’s 22-ball 44 had four sixes and three boundaries, while second fiddle Ingram scored 14 from 12.

Marnus Labuschagne hung around for a brief while, managing a 21-ball 33, but Phillips’ assault followed by quick wickets in the middle overs pegged them too far behind as they could only manage 182/8, losing by a comprehensive margin of 34 runs.
